Chadderton Town Hall History

Chadderton Town Hall was erected during 1912-13 by the former Chadderton Urban District Council, the architects being Taylor and Simister. Their chosen style was ‘a broad and strong treatment of the English Renaissance’, to be created by the use of Ruabon red
brick and Yorkshire stone. It had been hoped that the building would be opened by King George V on his Lancashire tour, but this was not possible.

The central feature of the façade is the stone portico surmounted by a balcony. Above this is an impressive stained glass window portraying Chadderton’s old coat of- arms. The window is framed in a semi-circular stone arch that reaches to roof level, whilst a stone cornice
adds further dignity to all elevations. The structure is crowned by a substantial cupola. The
modern clock turret replaces an earlier one, which also incorporated a flagpole. Internally, the entrance hall is equally impressive with pillars, mouldings, chandeliers, and ornate windows.
The staircase, with its massive stone balustrades, leads to the Edwardian ballroom, which has a magnificence of its own. The whole of the town hall displays an opulence, so characteristic of a bygone age.
